Uba Backonja


Winner of the Barbara Tate Scholarship, is pursuing her doctorate in the early entry PhD program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing, where she also earned her masters degree.  She plans to do research in and teach the following topics: women’s health, health care disparities, and informatics. She discovered the power of public health nursing as a disaster services volunteer with the American Red Cross in New Orleans, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. She is currently a National Library of Medicine Postdoctoral Bioinformatics Fellow at the University of Washington. In addition to her love of nursing, Uba loves to travel and spend time with her husband and two-year-old daughter.

NEF’s only purpose is to provide nursing scholarship assistance to make graduate level nursing education possible. NEF is the largest, single, private, professionally endorsed source of funds for advanced nursing study with over one hundred years of service to and for professional nursing.

NEF’s Board of Directors is comprised of leaders from nursing, education, technology, and business communities. Members donate their time and talent to the advancement of the nursing profession. NEF operates with exceptionally low overhead. NEF employs only one individual who serves in several capacities.
