Susan Bowar-Ferres [ PhD, RN, NEA-BC ]


Susan Bowar-Ferres, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, is an experienced nursing leader, who currently is Adjunct Professor of Nursing at the College of Nursing, New York University. Susan held the Vice President of Nursing position at the Hospital for Special Surgery for six years, prior to holding the SVP and Chief Nursing Officer of NYU Langone Medical Center for 13 years. Dedicated to the Magnet Recognition Program for Nursing Excellence, she led NYUHC to Magnet Designation status in 2005 and again in 2009; her work as a Magnet Appraiser continues since 2007. Leading the NY Organization of Nurse Executives as President when the "BSN in 10" legislative initiative was developed in 2002, she is a long term advocate for baccalaureate education, and graduate education at all levels. Appointed to the State Board of Nursing of NY in 2010, she is now Vice-Chair and continues to engage in promoting the profession of nursing, patient safety, and quality outcomes. Susan serves as President of the following Board: Nurses Education Fund, Inc., and is a member of the Advisory Board of the College of Nursing, NYU. She earned her BS in Nursing from the College of St. Teresa, Winona, MN, her MS in Med-Surg Nursing - CNS program, Adelphi University, and her PhD in Nursing from NYU. She is certified as Nurse Executive, Advanced.
