Miriam Kamau, BSN, RN, PHN, PMH-BC is the honored recipient of the NEF Madeline A. Naegle Scholarship. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from California State University San Bernardino in 2006 and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Science in Nursing with a specialization as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) from Azusa Pacific University.
Miriam is currently a psychiatric-mental health registered nurse within the Lanterman-Petris-Short Facility Designation Unit at the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LAC-DMH). Prior to joining the unit in 2019, she worked as a psychiatric-mental health registered nurse for the LAC-DMH Patients’ Rights Office, as a public health registered nurse for the Los Angeles County Departments of Public Health and Children and Family Services and as a mental health triage registered nurse for San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.
Some of Miriam’s accomplishments include a poster presentation at American Psychiatric Nurses Association’s (APNA) 34th Annual Conference as well as providing both the first in-person and virtual nursing continuing education units for Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health registered nurses and psychiatric technicians. She was amongst the first nurses in her department to obtain an American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Psychiatric-Mental Health Registered Nurse Board Certification. Miriam was also honored to be inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor society as a nurse leader.
Upon completion of the graduate program, Miriam plans to obtain national certification as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner and will continue to serve vulnerable and underserved patients seeking mental health and substance abuse treatment within Los Angeles County by reducing mental health disparities and increasing access to mental health services for underserved populations while pursuing a doctorate degree in nursing. Miriam is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, American Psychiatric Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, and is a fellow of the inaugural American Psychological Association - Interdisciplinary Minority Fellowship Program.

NEF’s Board of Directors is comprised of leaders from nursing, education, technology, and business communities. Members donate their time and talent to the advancement of the nursing profession. NEF operates with exceptionally low overhead. NEF employs only one individual who serves in several capacities.
