Michael Williams
Michael L. Williams, MSN, RN, CCRN, CNE, is an Associate Professo r of Nursing at
Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI. During his time at EMU, he has served as
BSN Program Coordinator, Faculty Advisor for the EMU Student Nurses Association
and State Consultant to the Michigan Nursing Students Association.
Michael served as president of the American Association ofCritical-Care Nurses
(AACN) in 200 1-2002 and recipient of AACN's lifetime member award. Prior to this
time, Williams was the employed at the University of Michigan Health System as the
Clinical Nurse Specialist for Adult Thoracic Surgery and Educational Nurse Coordinator
for the Adult Nurse Internship Program and Adult Critical Care Orientation.
A registered nurse for 23 years, William s has been a strong advocate for nursing students
and patient s alike. Over his tenure as a nurse, he has mentored countless nursing students
and new nurses to acute care and critical care nursing units. Beginning his career as a
graduate nurse in the Medical-Respiratory ICU at Ingham Medica l Center in Lansing,
MI, he also worked in the Surgical ICU and as the Nurse Educator and Clinical Nurse
Specialist for Critical Care during this time there.
He is a member of the American Association ofCritical-Care Nurses, American
Assembly for Men in Nursing, Michigan Nurses Association, National League for
Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. Williams has served on
numerous committees on behalf of AACN including the Education Committee, Group of
100, National Teaching Institute Workgroup chairperson, Awards & Scholarship
Committee, CE Panel Review group, and Nominating Committee. Williams is the
recipient of numerous honors and awards including AACN Mentoring Award, AACN
Excellence in Education Award, Excellence in Classroom Teaching from EMU and the
2007 Leader of Leader Awards from the National Student Nurses Association.
Williams received a baccalaureate degree in 1982 in Medical Technology from Michigan
State University, an A.D.N. from Lansing Community College, Lansing, MI, his MSN
from Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI. He is currently a doctoral student at
the University of Michigan School of Nursing.
